Database coverage

Inspec provides comprehensive coverage of traditional and cutting-edge publications in the specific fields of physics, electrical & electronic engineering, communications, computer science, control engineering and information technology. It is the multidisciplinary resource database that covers a wide range of topics including operations research, material science, information science, oceanography, engineering mathematics, nuclear engineering, environmental science, geophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical technology and biophysics.

Coverage policy
The Inspec database contains content that is quality or peer reviewed scientific and engineering literature written in any language that falls within the subject scope of the database. The Inspec editorial staff welcome feedback from users. Suggestions for new publications to be included in the database should be sent to inspec.submissions@theiet.org

Database Content

Through its in-depth value added indexing, Inspec gives researchers access to over 14 million citations to the global literature of over 1000 major publishers, from 1969 to date, with over half a million abstracts being added each year.

Inspec indexes the following content:

  • Over 5,000 journals, including those available in print, online and open access, 1600 of which are abstracted completely
  • 2500 conference proceedings
  • Numerous books, reports and dissertations

In addition the Inspec Archive provides access back to 1898 to 870,000 articles that have added subject indexing from the current Thesaurus and Classification to provide seamless retrieval of information of over 100 years.

Subject and specialised indexing

A whole range of indexing is added to each abstract by subject specialists to ensure that the right information is retrieved in a swift and cost effective manner.

  • Thesaurus
A dynamic and evolving controlled vocabulary of over 10,000 scientific terms that provide accuracy and quality to search results.
  • Free indexing
A search field in which you can discover significant and new and emerging concepts.
  • Classification
An extensive hierarchical classification, developed by scientists and engineers over 30 years that can limit searches to your subject areas
  • Treatment Codes
Confine your search to the type of information e.g., experimental results, market data, new developments.
  • Document Types
Restrict your search to particular documents e.g., journal articles, conference papers.
  • Numerical Data Indexing
Specialised indexing that standardises terminology and values to retrieve significant measurements.
  • Chemical Substance Indexing
Indexing that aids retrieval of inorganic compound formulae and other material systems that overcomes a number of problems found in uncontrolled indexing and free text.
  • Astronomical Object Indexing
Standardises designations to aid retrieval of celestial objects outside the solar system.
